Weekend Woodshed #18 - Powell Randolph

6 Stroke Roll Fill

For this weekend woodshed lesson I’d like to show you a pattern I tend to play a lot. It’s a sextuplet fill that combines the 6-stroke roll (RLLRRL) with a 6-note pattern between the hands and feet (KKRLKK). In this variation, the hands and feet pattern continues in measure 2 with the right hand falling on the quarter note triplet. Back to the regular pattern in measure 3 and winding down with 8th note triplets in measure 4 ending with a single stroke sextuplet in the feet up to a flam on the snare. Take the initial pattern and experiment moving around the kit. It’s also fun to play this pattern as 32nd notes. Have fun! See you next time.
