Weekend Woodshed #9 - Aubrey Dayle

The Double Stroke Roll

Developing articulate rudiments is always a challenge. The double stroke roll is especially tricky in the beginning. There is a tendency to play the initial stroke strong and then somewhat disregard the second stroke of each double sticking. It is also common to learn the rudiment with the singular goal of increasing the speed of the roll as opposed to doing so while paying particular attention to how it fits in tempo. This lesson will give some insight as to how to achieve both the desired evenness of each stroke as well as how to understand better how to play the roll on various rhythmic grids.
