About C.J. Watkins

C.J. Watkins is a drummer and composer born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, now based in Atlanta, Georgia. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Composition from Morehouse College and continues to blend his formal training with his deep passion for rhythm and performance.

C.J.'s Career

C.J. Watkins’s love for music began in infancy, as he would watch the drummer every Sunday, sitting beside him to observe and learn. He started playing drums at just two years old when he received his first drum set—and he hasn’t stopped since.

At an early age, one of C.J.’s band teachers recognized his exceptional talent and moved him to the High School Concert Band, an impressive accomplishment as C.J. was only in the seventh grade at the time. During this period, he became the two-time champion of the Annual Guitar Center Jr. Drum-Off (2011–2012), a prestigious competition showcasing young percussionists from the St. Louis area and one of the few of its kind in the nation.

C.J. received his formal education at Christian Brothers College (CBC) High School in Town & Country, Missouri, where he was an active member of the Jazz Band, Drumline, Studio Band, and Basketball Team. He was also part of the St. Louis Jazz All Stars, a highly selective community jazz program featuring the top high school jazz musicians in Missouri. Chosen from more than 200 auditioning musicians at The Jazz Bistro, C.J. performed weekend sessions across the St. Louis metropolitan area. Through this program, he studied under Will Kennedy of The Yellowjackets and renowned jazz vibraphonist Stefon Harris.

In 2016, C.J. won the Guitar Center Drum-Off District Competition and advanced to the regional finals in Chicago, Illinois. Throughout his career, he has performed with acclaimed artists across gospel and jazz, including Grammy Award nominee Ledisi, BeBe Winans, Israel Houghton, Donald Lawrence, Ricky Dillard, Sunday Best winner Geoffrey Golden, Stefon Harris, and Will Kennedy of The Yellowjackets.

C.J. has attended the Hampton Ministers’ Conference and the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Conference, is a member of the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses, Inc., and appeared in the 2019 Dodge Super Bowl commercial.

"Dream has enhanced my sound with every single hit. With every line of cymbals this great company offers, they continue to prove they’re the best in the game. I’m so grateful not only to be a part of this company, but also to be part of this family. It means the world to me to use these cymbals to create a sound like no other."
