About Deacon Washington

Deacon Washington is a freelance recording and touring drummer with two alternative music projects (The UnKnown and Ghostwork) that he formed, writes for, and performs with.

Deacon's Career

Hailing from New Orleans, a city steeped in a truly diverse and rich musical heritage, Deacon was reared in an environment where the proximity to music made being a musician virtually inevitable. His introduction to the drums came early in life and by age 7, he was being mentored by the drummer at his parents' church. By age 13, he took over the drummer's chair at that same church. By age 15, he was playing professionally at several churches and eventually landed a gig with, New Orleans gospel legend, Raymond Miles.

After these accomplishments in the gospel realm, Deacon sought to expand his musical experiences. At 17, he landed a gig on the world-famous Bourbon Street in New Orleans. He would go on to play regularly for several years on the famous strip with a variety of artists including Roxanne Price, Charmaine Neville, and Gary Brown. Deacon continued to broaden his musical exposure by joining several local ska, punk, hard rock, and thrash metal bands including Dang Bruh Y?, Bile, New Religion, Killjoy (a project that included ex members of Crowbar, The Slugs, Shell Shock, and Pantera), and several other projects in the rock genre.

Always looking to expand his experiences, Deacon was hired as a studio musician and, at 19 years old, began a career as a session drummer.
Deacon has performed on over seventy albums to date. He has worked with and/or toured with a wide range of artists including Al Mikel, Steve Lillywhite, Willie Weeks, The Drifters, Soul Asylum, Albert Jordon, Dave Pirner (solo), Ken Franklin, Tyler Perry, Chris Whitley, Allan Toussaint, Boys II Men, Rob Wagner, Coco Robicheaux, Joel Moss, Lester Wright, and a host of others.

In keeping with his desire to expand his lived experiences and express his musicality on other instruments, Deacon formed two projects of his own as vehicles for recording and releasing music that he wrote. To date, both projects (The UnKnown and Ghostwork) have released recordings. Deacon wrote, produced, played drums, bass, guitar, keyboards, and handled lead and backing vocal duty on both albums with performance contributions from several other artists.

Deacon is still driven by his love of music and endless search for new ways to express himself musically.

"Dream Cymbals have unmatched character, tone, and response qualities that make them a joy to play. Whether in studio or in a live setting, they always allow me to capture what I am chasing! I have been playing Dream Cymbals for almost two decades! It is one of the longest standing product endorsements I have and for good reason......I have never felt the need to change! I still love the sounds that I have discovered in every cymbal I have and the company's stance on the environment is equally important to me. I also deeply appreciate the fact that there is a talented group of people pulling the strings behind the brand......the Dream Team!"
