About Jake Kelley

Jake Kelley is a drummer based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Embracing the importance of stepping outside his comfort zone, he has developed a distinctive style that blends hip-hop and pop grooves—layered with intricate ghost notes—into his lifelong foundation of hard-hitting rock.

Jake's Career

Jake Kelley is a drummer originally from the wooded outskirts of Northeastern Pennsylvania, where his earliest audience consisted mostly of patient neighboring cows. From a young age, he was drawn obsessively to the drum kit, spending hours playing along to artists like Tré Cool and John Bonham, or crafting grooves and fills of his own.

In 2017, Kelley formed a rock band with friends from jazz band, performing regularly around local venues until leaving home in 2019 to attend university in Pittsburgh. There, he immersed himself in the city’s vibrant music scene, discovering not only inspiration but a sense of community. By 2020, he was recruited to play in a punk band, where he honed his approach to DIY recording and developed a strong sense of artistic authenticity.

In 2021, a collaboration with friends led to the formation of feeble little horse and the release of their debut EP, Modern Tourism. The project marked a turning point in Kelley’s creative evolution, expanding his sense of dynamics and deepening his passion for the instrument. Known for blending hip-hop and pop-influenced grooves—rich with ghost notes—into a foundation of hard-hitting rock, Kelley continues to push his boundaries, make music with friends, and explore new creative paths.

After using a mix of cymbals for most of my life, a friend I made in Pittsburgh showed me his Bliss Paper Thin crash in the fall of 2021, and I immediately fell in love with how bright, washy, and quick it was. As soon as I had saved enough in early 2022, I replaced my entire setup with a mix of the Bliss, Energy, and Contact lines, and I’ve been playing these cymbals almost exclusively ever since. Dream cymbals have such a defined sound, with a uniquely rich variety of textures that I haven’t found anywhere else. No other cymbals provide me with the same wave of inspiration and creativity behind the kit as Dream plates do.
