About James Stuart

James in an NYC based, Australian born drummer and visual artist best known for his playing with bands Haram, Sheer Mag, Success and the Eyedrops. While having spent most of the last 29 years playing in punk bands, James playing style is eclectic and inspired by a wider range of references: the martial drumming from John Williams scores, Basil Poledouris' thundering drums from the Conan the Barbarian OST, Weather Report, Indonesian Gamelan and a few bands he saw play at the Civic and Woden Youth Centers in the early 2000s.

James's Career

Growing up in the punk scene between the United States and Australia, James has played in dozens bands on both sides of the Pacific.

He is best known for his playing with bands Haram, Sheer Mag, Success and the Eyedrops.

James has taken his unique playing style, inspired decades of exposure to Punk and his passion for music like Weather Report, Herbie Hancock, The Germs, Earl Hudson and Basil Poledouris' scores on tours around Australia, South East Asia, Japan, North America, Europe and beyond.

James' approach in conceiving of not only the music but also the visual art for his bands is best expressed in his work for NYC's Haram, where his musical direction pairs seamlessly with his artwork for the band. What you see and hear is all one cohesive concept.

"My sound isn't complete without the blistering, sizzling, yet complex tones of the Bliss series. I get enough range from these cymbals to play everything from textural music, to jazz, to pop and punk, and always retain that right character and balance of complexity and clarity. The Bliss series is something that I had been looking for for my entire drumming life, and now that I have it I can't let it go. I use my 20" crashes on every. single. recording. I do."
