About Jerbrel Bowens

Jerbrel Bowens has been teaching marching and concert percussion for over 10 years and continues to be an innovator in the percussion and full ensemble composition feild. Jerbrel holds several composer and arranger positions with ensembles all over the world. Locally, Jerbrel is an administrator at Brighton High School in Brighton, NY, and works as a percussion/ full time arranger and consultant with the NYS championship band, Greece Blue Knights.

Jerbrel's Career

Born in 1994, Jerbrel is a versatile composer and music educator whose work spans young ensembles through collegiate and professional groups. He holds a degree in Music Education with emphases in Composition and Percussion from Houghton University, as well as New York State K–12 Music Certification. His teachers include Dr. Carrie Magin, Dr. David H. Davies, Dustin Woodard, Jim Tiller, and jazz studies with Dr. Ken Crane. A graduate of Webster Schroeder High School, Jerbrel developed as a percussionist, composer, and four-year snare drummer, serving as section leader in 2011.

Jerbrel’s early involvement in the marching arts shaped his career as an instructor, arranger, and director. He began with the Pioneer High School Marching Panthers and later directed the Webster High School Marching Band—2021 NYS LS2 Grand Champions—while also serving as music arranger and percussion coordinator. He additionally instructed the Victor Marching Blue Devils and Victor Indoor Percussion, both state champions during his tenure. Jerbrel went on to teach in public schools, earning tenure at Rochester’s School of the Arts, and now serves as an assistant principal at Brighton High School.

His compositions and arrangements have been performed internationally, including a drumline feature on BBC News during the Royal Legion Remembrance Ceremony, performances at the Outback Bowl, and premieres across Europe, Asia, and the United States. His works have been featured on SciMax Radio and purchased by Pershing’s Own (The United States Army Band). He has written over 100 pieces for marching band, drum corps, wind ensemble, choir, orchestra, chamber groups, indoor percussion, and drumline.

Jerbrel is published independently, writes for Tresona Music, and collaborates with T.U.X. People’s Music in Texas. Influences on his compositional voice include Richard Saucedo, Michael Sweeney, Samuel Hazo, Leonard Bernstein, Maria Schneider, Erica Seguine, Aaron Copland, Percy Grainger, Igor Stravinsky, Robert Glasper, and others. He continues to compose with the goal of providing fresh, accessible, and inspiring music for ensembles and educators worldwide.
