Jimmy's Career

Jimmy Bennington (born May 22, 1970; Columbus, Ohio) is a primarily self-taught artist who began playing professionally in Texas in 1990. He was mentored by the late Elvin Jones—legendary drummer for John Coltrane—during the final decade of Jones' life. Bennington was eventually hired as Jones’ band manager and drum tech, touring the world as part of the Elvin Jones Jazz Machine.

Since then, Bennington spent several years on the West Coast before settling in Chicago, which has been his home base for over two decades. He has performed and recorded with artists such as Joe Lovano, Julian Priester, Perry Robinson, John Stowell, Ed Schuller, Bert Wilson, Ken Filiano, Steve Cohn, John Blum, John Gross, Daniel Carter, and French bassist Benjamin Duboc.

Bennington is featured on respected labels including ESP, Cadence Jazz Records, CIMP, CIMPoL, Unseen Rain, OA2, and most recently Slam (UK). He also founded his own label, ThatSwan! Records, which produced the collector’s item "Portraits and Silhouettes" featuring Julian Priester. The album received “Best Recordings” recognition from AllAboutJazz–New York and led to notable performances at the Chicago Jazz Festival and Fred Anderson’s Velvet Lounge.

"My story with Dream is rather unique. Long ago, fellow Dream artist and veteran jazz drummer Ron Enyard would rave to me about Dream cymbals. At one point, he even gifted me one of his cherished ride cymbals, saying, "Okay, now that you're doing all this stuff, you might as well have good-quality cymbals to match!"

Years later, Victor Salazar of the famed Vic’s Drum Shop in Chicago invited me to come play at the store. He was enthusiastic about my drumming and asked if I was endorsed by anyone. With a kind word, he opened the door to the good folks at Dream Cymbals and Gongs, Inc.—and the rest, for these many years now, has truly been a Dream come true.

It’s an honor to be associated with such a fine company. Thank you, Dream!"
