About Justin Hackett

Justin Hackett is a versatile and experienced drummer with over 30 years in the music industry, known for his dynamic style and adaptability across genres. Emerging from the Cincinnati scene, he gained early recognition with the rap core band Illshot, later expanding his range with roots rock group Messerly and Ewing, and currently performs with alternative rock band Echo After 9 and artist Mike Swindell. Alongside his musical pursuits, Hackett is deeply committed to education, teaching privately in Pittsburgh and serving as a professor and department chair at Pennsylvania Western University.

Originally rooted in the Cincinnati music scene, Hackett sharpened his skills across a wide range of genres, laying the foundation for a career that has spanned decades and styles. From rap core to roots rock and alternative, his rhythmic fingerprint is both distinctive and adaptable.
Hackett first gained recognition as the powerhouse behind the kit for Illshot, a hard-hitting rap core band that earned a loyal following for its explosive energy and raw intensity. He later showcased his stylistic range in the roots rock outfit Messerly and Ewing, where his groove-based sensibility and nuanced touch helped shape the band’s earthy, heartfelt sound. Continuing to evolve artistically, he currently plays with alternative rock band Echo After 9 and singer-songwriter writer Mike Swindell.
Hackett balances his music schedule with a deep commitment to education. In addition to teaching at a private studio in the south hills of Pittsburgh, he is also a professor and chairperson of the department of Psychology, Counseling, and Art Therapy at Pennsylvania Western University.
