About Matt Exton

Matt is a versatile powerhouse behind the kit. A performing and recording artist based in Leeds, UK, who studied Jazz at Leeds College of Music.

Matt's Career

Matt Exton has played drums all his life, getting his first kit when he was four years old, and has been a Dream Cymbals artist for 8 years now.
Matt has been playing for nearly 30 years and has been involved with a huge number of projects during that time. His current band, Dan’s Girlfriend, are regularly touring across the UK and he is instrumental to their fantastic stage presence and expressive sound.

Matt, born in the Midlands, started lessons when he was 7 and quickly realised that he not only loved playing the drums, but was obsessed with performing on a stage.
As a kid he joined Saturday Schools and joined his first band at the age of 8, and was soon headlining shows early on.
He studied music throughout school and kept playing drums in bands alongside his education. Matt also gained a classical background playing in orchestras and brass bands as a percussionist and through school and National Youth County Music was fortunate to tour in Europe and play at prestigious venues in the UK such as The Albert Hall.
In 2010, Matt studied Jazz at Leeds College of Music. A genre he knew would push him to become a better player. LCoM was the perfect platform to be among other similar-minded musicians, and gave him the opportunity to truly discover his sound and improve his playing further. Studying under Dave Walsh was instrumental to his development and he really relished every part of the course, studying Indian music, experimental music and composition, graduating in 2013.

Since then Matt has focused his playing on original music and has been in independent bands such as Where Fires Are, Late Night Legacy and is currently behind the kit for Dan’s Girlfriend. A female fronted indie/rock band which blends a lot of raw rhythms with soaring vocals. Think Blondie with a saxophone. They perform across the country and are working hard on their second album. Their debut album, Killing Time, came out in 2025.

As well as playing live Matt has recorded for the likes of AJ Nash, Alex Tracey, Sam Augustine and so many more. He also writes and produces music at home and loves the balance music brings to his family life.

"I’ve been a Dream Cymbal artist for 8 years and still wholeheartedly support what they do as a company. I’ve never met someone who works at Dream who doesn’t love what they do! Their products are second to none and I love how cutting edge and different their vast range of cymbals are.
I’m really into the Dark Matter series, the sound they create just makes me want to really play and express myself. Their versatility and control give me so much confidence. I’m really proud to represent them as an artist."
