About Matt Holmes

Matt Holmes is a Chicago-based engineer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. A graduate of Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music, his career began on the road, touring with his band Valaska. He opened his studio The Echo Mill in 2016, where he has been helping artists across a wide range of genres bring their creative visions to life.

Matt's Career

Matt Holmes’ path to becoming an engineer/producer began at a young age. Starting with piano lessons in elementary school, he quickly added bass, guitar, and drums to his repertoire. A pivotal moment came in high school when his band made their first recordings, shifting his focus from performance to production. He pursued this calling at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music, where he earned a B.S. in Recording Arts.

After graduating, Matt balanced touring with a post-production career, in addition to recording bands on nights and weekends. In 2016 he opened his studio, The Echo Mill, where he has worked with artists such as SaxKixAve, Sleepwalk and Tank and the Bangas. Since then he has continued to play and tour with his band Valaska and other artists occasionally, but most of his time is spent in the studio helping musicians actualize their art. Whether he is tracking a band, playing drums for an artist he is producing, or composing library music, Dream cymbals have proven to be invaluable and versatile tools that have been critical in helping Matt get his drum sounds - excelling at everything from folk to grungegaze.

"Dream cymbals have been my go to for over a decade. Any Dream cymbal I've used in the studio has always ended up sitting perfectly in the mix. I can make them as bright and present and air-y as I want, without them getting harsh and annoying. The brash upper midrange frequencies that are emphasized by some other manufactures can absolutely eat up a track and relegate your room mics to the trash bin, ruining your drum sound. While performing live, most of the acts I play with need my cymbals to sound great throughout a huge dynamic range, and I've found all my Dream cymbals to be incredibly expressive. From soft songs played with brushes, to all out crashing on my ride, my Dream cymbals will project as much as I need, while sounding sweet and not relying on harsh frequency ranges to cut through the mix."
