Mike's Career

Mike Duffield is a Toronto-based art rock drummer whose work draws from a mélange of different musical styles. Primarily known for his work with the psychedelic folk rock band Beams, he is also an in-demand live performer and session musician with over 50 album credits to his name who has toured North America extensively and had his work appear in film, television, and soundpacks. He has also performed/recorded with Ducks Ltd., Flowers of Hell, Susie Ibarra, Ducks Ltd., Dany Laj and the Looks, Blonde Elvis, Praises The Diableros, Colin Fisher, and Pelican Movement.

He began playing drums at the age of 13 and was working the kit in various Toronto clubs (illegally) within two years; a formal education in the rigors of the craft ensued at Berklee College of Music and Humber College, where he earned a B.A. in Jazz Studies. At the age of 17, he was serendipitously introduced to Elvin Jones after a Toronto Jazz Festival performance and was recommended to study with legendary drum guru Jim Blackley, with whom he studied with for seven years. He has also studied with Mike Mangini, Susie Ibarra, Greg Fox, and Brian Eno.

Highlights of his career include playing festivals such as Virgin Fest, SXSW, Levitation, Ottawa Blues Fest, and Pop Montreal; working with esteemed producers/recording engineers Peter J. Moore (Cowboy Junkies), John McEntire (Tortoise, Broken Social Scene), and Howard Bilerman (Arcade Fire); having placements on HBO’s Californication; and, most of all, getting the opportunity to meet and/or work with many of his musical heroes.

His biggest regret is declining to be in the Blue Man Group when they had their Toronto run.

"I've owned a lot of cymbals over my career and Dream cymbals are the most versatile and musical out of any brand I've ever played. The music I perform requires me to have cymbals that can cover large dynamic ranges and big tonal shifts and my Dreams always do the job."
