About Paul Wertico

Paul Wertico, a seven-time Grammy-winning drummer best known for his work with the Pat Metheny Group, has performed with artists like David Bowie and Kurt Elling and released several acclaimed solo albums. Also a dedicated educator, he’s in his 22nd year as Associate Professor of Jazz at Roosevelt University and continues to conduct drum clinics worldwide.

Paul's Career

Paul Wertico is a Grammy-winning drummer hailed as “one of the most versatile and musical drummers in music today.” Best known for his 18-year tenure with the Pat Metheny Group (1983–2001), he earned seven Grammy Awards, contributed to David Bowie’s hit This Is Not America, and played in all 50 U.S. states and over 60 countries.

A prolific recording artist, Paul has appeared on hundreds of albums, including Grammy-nominated releases by Paul Winter and Kurt Elling, and has released numerous critically acclaimed solo and collaborative projects. His work with Wertico Cain & Gray and other ensembles has garnered international praise and awards, including an Independent Music Award for Best Live Performance Album.

Music Education

Paul is deeply dedicated to music education, teaching drums for over 50 years. He’s an Associate Professor of Jazz Studies at Roosevelt University and previously taught at Northwestern University. He’s led masterclasses worldwide and contributed to major music publications, serving on advisory panels for Modern Drummer, the Jazz Institute of Chicago, and the Recording Academy.

Honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Cape Breton and Montréal Drum Festivals, Paul was named a Chicagoan of the Year by the Chicago Tribune in 2004. He also earned a 2012-2013 Emmy nomination for his work as Musical Director of Inventing the Future.

Drumming innovation

Wertico has pioneered drumming innovation, inventing TUBZ and releasing signature gear through Pro-Mark and Dream Cymbals. His instructional book, Turn the Beat Around, was published by Alfred Music in 2017, and his DVD Drum Philosophy was named one of Modern Drummer’s best in 25 years.

Recent projects include Drums Without Boundaries (one of DownBeat’s Best Albums of 2023), Marbinico, and several albums with his U.S. and Italy-based trios. Upcoming releases feature collaborations with David Becker, Fareed Haque, and more.
