About Raul Carona

Raul Carona is a drummer originally from Mexico, now based in Canada. He currently performs with The Sellouts (The Who tribute) and SCRAAM (thrash-prog metal), and is preparing to release his debut solo project.

Raul's Career

Raul Carona is currently the drummer for The Sellouts—Ottawa’s only tribute to The Who—as well as the capital city thrash band SCRAAM. He is also preparing to release his first recording as a solo artist.

Originally from Mexico City, Raul grew up immersed in his father’s record collection, discovering rock through bands like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Queen, Pink Floyd, and Jethro Tull. He began playing drums at age 17, drawing inspiration during his teen years from artists such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Yes, Genesis, and Dream Theater. Mostly self-taught, Raul cites Carl Palmer, Mike Portnoy, Neil Peart, John Bonham, and Keith Moon among his biggest drumming heroes.

Raul's first serious project was the Mexican progressive rock band Epitaph, where he not only played drums but also served as lead vocalist and lyricist. The band released two albums — "Human, Not Humane" (2015) and "A Song in Time" (2018) — and toured extensively across Mexico between 2014 and 2017.

In 2018, Raul relocated to Ottawa and joined local power metal outfit Machine Messiah, the long-standing project of Bobby Stones, former vocalist for the legendary Exciter. With Machine Messiah, Raul performed alongside notable acts such as Anvil, Hammerfall, Warbringer, Enforcer, Glen Drover, and THOR.

Raul is now a core member of The Sellouts, a tribute to one of his all-time favorite bands, The Who. The group has become a staple in Ottawa’s bar and brewery circuit, with a full calendar of shows lined up for 2025.

As any passionate drummer does, Raul juggles multiple projects. Since 2019, he has been part of SCRAAM, an Ottawa-based thrash metal band set to release their debut EP in 2025. He has also demonstrated his versatility by performing as a live sub for Latin pop group NortNSur, honoring his Latino roots.

Most recently, Raul is proud to announce the upcoming release of his debut solo project, scheduled for 2025. The music blends his diverse influences and features a lineup of exceptional Ottawa musicians. It will be launched via his official website.

Raul proudly plays Dream Cymbals, Yamaha drums, and Vater drumsticks.

"Dream Cymbals has supported me ever since I started to look for the definitive sound I wanted to have, they cover all bases and situations for me, from session playing to live and loud, there is no situation a Dream cymbal can't cover, my personal favorite is the Energy line which I'd describe as thunderous"
