About Spencer Inch

Spencer is one of those people who perpetually struggles with the fact that it is impossible to learn and do everything, yet hopelessly he tries anyway. Basking in a particular but not uncommon brand of insanity, he bounces from genre to genre seeking the peak of authenticity in each and finding much joy in the process. He recently spent two years playing bodhran with the North American tour of Come From Away, and currently investigates the life of a circus musician from a comfortable distance with the Water For Elephants National Tour.

Spencer's Career

nspired at a young age by the music of Broadway, New York City tri-state area drummer and percussionist Spencer Inch has cultivated a diverse genre-bending career. Starting at age six in his hometown of Wilton, Connecticut, Spencer studied drum set with jazz and theater drummer John Cutrone who focused heavily on the ability to read music and play a wide array of styles. He studied classical music at Penn State University (2006-2010) where he received numerous accolades as a performer, including an honorable mention in Yamaha’s Young Performing Artist Competition and Penn State’s own Creative Achievement Award. He completed an undergraduate degree in percussion performance before moving on to the University of Miami (2010-2012) to complete graduate studies in studio music and jazz.

Spencer's wide array of skills led Spencer to an eclectic musical life. After having traveled the world playing drums for Norwegian Cruise Lines, he moved to New York City in 2015 where he did whatever he could to be as busy as humanly possible doing just short of everything. In between jobs as a background actor for tv/film, you could find Spencer in wedding bands, pit orchestras, cabarets, recording sessions for indie artists, or paying his dues at iconic LES venues such as The Bitter End, or the now-defunct Rockwood Music Hall (R.I.P.).

In one of his formative NYC musical experiences, Spencer joined up with friends to write original music under the name Adler Hall, a Brooklyn-based indie band with numerous influences, including folk, alternative rock, and contemporary chamber music. “Teresa,” the lead single off their last LP, Beware the Water, is “lyrically beautiful,” says The Wild Honey Pie, and “builds upon the typical guitar-led folk song with a more strategic approach. There must be something in the water in Brooklyn making [its] music scene better than ever, and Adler Hall is no exception to this phenomenon.”

In 2021 he toured with Philadelphia-based songwriter Sean Barna, opening for the Counting Crows on their Butter Miracle tour. And after years of regularly playing for shows at the White Plains Performing Arts Center, Spencer joined the North American tour of Come From Away in 2023, diving into the bodhran and traditional Celtic music. Now he investigates the life of a circus musician from a comfortable distance for the National Tour of Water For Elephants in theaters across the U.S.

"I bought my first Dream cymbal in 2009, a 19" Bliss crash/ride, and I've been obsessed ever since. I had the fortunate opportunity to work for them at PASIC for a few years where I met some of the team and found a tribe of like-minded people who just have an undeniable, wholesome love for music. The instruments are affordable, unique, and incredibly expressive, and I've grown to love that sound. Plus, the people in the Dream family are just so dang nice."
