About Tim Shia

Tim is a Toronto-based drummer and multimedia artist who has performed with a diverse range of acclaimed musicians, including Holly Cole, Sarah Slean, Donne Roberts, Quique Escamilla, and Caity Gyorgy. Since 2005, he has led the genre-bending jazz group The Worst Pop Band Ever, touring across North America and Asia. He is also co-founder of PPF House, through which he has contributed music and sound design for film and television projects with the NFB, CBC, and Disney.

Tim's Career

Whether it’s backing Holly Cole at the Montreal Jazz Festival, playing Afrofest with Donne Roberts, performing with Sarah Slean and orchestra at an old air force base, touring Mexico with Rich Underhill and Caity Gyorgy, rocking a hip-hop festival in Taiwan with LEO37 and Minyen Hsieh, eating copious amounts of tapas while touring Spain with singer-songwriter Barzin, or winning a Trille Or Award with Amélie & Les Singes Bleus, Tim Shia has had the good fortune to play with a host of talented musicians across a wide range of genres over the years.

At the same time, his own critically acclaimed group, The Worst Pop Band Ever, has packed festivals and clubs from St. John’s to Vancouver, and from NYC to Taipei, sharing stages with artists like The Bad Plus, Jeff Parker, and Elizabeth Shepherd since 2005. They are celebrating their 20th anniversary with a new album and tour starting in fall 2025.

Tim has scored and licensed music for film and television, with credits including CBC, Teletoon, the NFB, and even a Disney pilot. This includes a number of award-winning animated works produced by the multimedia company PPF House, which he operates with his brother, Howie.

For nearly three decades, Tim has taught jazz workshops for elementary schools, post-secondary institutions, and jazz festivals, and even gave a TEDx talk. He also hosted a radio show on Canada’s only jazz station, Jazz FM 91.1, as well as on Polaris nominee Paul Chin’s iStoleTheSoul internet radio platform.

Tim is a proud Dream Cymbals and Headhunters Drumsticks artist, and the father of three feral daughters.

“I love Dream Cymbals both as a product and as a company. Their cymbals are distinctive in both look and sound, and they’re constantly innovating. They’re also priced fairly, which is especially important for drummers of all levels today.

The company itself is a great example of cultural collaboration in production, while remaining Canadian-owned with an amazing, socially conscious, and genuinely sincere staff.”
