Wil's Career

Dr. Wil Richmond is a native of Gulfport, Ms. He received both BME and MME degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Ms. While at Southern Miss., Richmond studied percussion from Dr. John Wooton (Dr. Throwdown). He has also studied under the tutelage of Dr. Mohamad Schuman, Dr. Thomas Fraschillo, Dr. Steven Moser, and Dr. James Standland. In 2025 he graduated with a Doctorate of Arts in Music Education from William Carey University. His Doctoral Thesis titled, “A Performance Practice Guide To John Mackey’s Writing For Percussion Within The Wind Ensemble” is a must-read for those performing and conducting John Mackey’s works. He has been a member of the Gulf Coast Band Director’s Association, Mississippi Bandmasters Association, The Gulf Coast Color Guard and Percussion Circuit, Louisiana - Mississippi Color Guard and Percussion Circuit, Music and Visual judge for the GCGPC, and is a proud educational endorser for Salyers Percussion, Dream Cymbals, Grover Percussion, and Ludwig Musser.

Dr. Richmond is currently the Director of Bands at Holmes Community College where he teaches applied percussion, marching band, and conducts the Wind Ensemble. Dr. Richmond also composes the halftime music for the marching band as well as coordinates the drill.

Dr. Richmond enjoys composing for various marching bands, concert bands, and indoor percussion ensembles. His groups have been WGI Regional finalists and received gold, silver, and bronze medals in their circuits. In 2017, Richmond made his debut as a Film Score composer: 'Queen Dracula' and 'Fire Summer.'

Dr. Richmond currently resides in Gulfport, Ms where he enjoys spending time outdoors hunting, fishing, and spending quality time with his family.
