Benedikt Hesse is a drummer and bandleader from Cologne, Germany. Trained at the renowned Drummers Collective in New York and further forged by Johnny Vidacovich in New Orleans, Hesse has performed across half the globe, with concert tours through the United States, Japan, India, and China, alongside more than 1,600 performances in musical theatre and stage productions. Today, he tours primarily with the BENEDIKT HESSE TRIO (BH3) alongside Volker Deglmann (trumpet) and Gero Körner (Hammond organ), where the trio’s unusual instrumentation and almost telepathic interplay create a distinctive sound between groove, funk, jazz, New Orleans spirit, and Afro-Caribbean warmth.

Benedikt's Career

Benedikt Hesse is a German drummer, bandleader, educator, and cultural organizer based in Cologne. Born in 1982, he trained at the renowned Drummers Collective in New York and further shaped his musical voice through the rhythmic traditions of New Orleans, including studies with Johnny Vidacovich. Since then, Hesse has performed across the globe, with concert tours taking him to the United States, Japan, India, and China, alongside more than 1,600 performances in musical theatre and stage productions. His playing draws deeply from jazz, New Orleans groove, Afro-Cuban and Latin American traditions, while expanding the sonic possibilities of the modern drumset through unconventional textures such as cowbells, woodblocks, buckets, and electronic percussion.

Today, Hesse is best known for the BENEDIKT HESSE TRIO (BH3), his distinctive organ-trumpet-drums ensemble with Volker Deglmann (trumpet) and Gero Körner (Hammond organ). Together, the trio has developed a highly individual sound—where groove-driven jazz meets funk, Caribbean warmth, and the spirit of New Orleans. With an almost telepathic interplay and a powerful live presence, BH3 creates concerts that are immersive, energetic, and emotionally resonant.

Beyond the stage, Hesse is deeply committed to musical education and cultural work. As chairman of delljazz e.V.—a jazz association with more than 500 members—he actively supports and curates jazz culture in Cologne. As an educator, he developed The Drummer’s Tatami, a mindful practice method designed to help drummers refine both technique and artistic awareness. Whether as performer, mentor, or organizer, Hesse’s work is driven by a clear mission: to connect people through rhythm, groove, and musical storytelling.

"For me, Dream Cymbals stand out because they combine Canadian sound design with centuries-old Chinese craftsmanship. They have a completely different voice than Turkish cymbals—more individual, more earthy. Especially the Dark Series speaks to me: dry, raw, and full of character.
Once I connected with their sound, I couldn’t imagine going back to anything else."
