About Phil Bloom

Phil Bloom considers himself a musician first and a drummer second. He plays with a strong sense of musicality, always focused on delivering exactly what each situation requires. This philosophy has guided his work for over 40 years as both a session musician and educator in New York. Well-versed in all styles of music, Phil enjoys blending genres—sometimes in unexpected ways—to create unique and exciting drum parts.

Phil's Career

Phil Bloom has been playing and teaching drums professionally for over 40 years. Throughout his career, he has performed with hundreds of talented musicians on stage and in the studio. A short list of his collaborations includes Earl Slick (David Bowie, John Lennon), G.E. Smith (Roger Waters, Bob Dylan), Dee Dee Ramone (Ramones), Frank Bello (Anthrax), Chris Barron (Spin Doctors), and even a double-drumming performance with Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers).

Phil’s studies with a variety of teachers—including Sam Ulano and Bernard Purdie, both of whom had a profound impact on his development—shaped his unique approach to drumming and education. As a teacher, he blends the concepts and philosophies of his mentors with his own techniques, creating a well-rounded and personal teaching style.

Influenced by legendary drummers such as Steve Gadd, John Bonham, Hal Blaine, Steve Jordan, Jeff Porcaro, and Neil Peart, Phil’s playing reflects a deep respect for musicality across genres. As a seasoned session drummer, he is well-versed in all styles of music—an invaluable skill he brings to both performance and education.

Currently based in New York City, Phil teaches privately and serves as an educator at Collegiate School, where he has taught hundreds of students—many of whom have gone on to play professionally. His philosophy, both as a player and a teacher, is simple: "The song is greater than myself."

Phil proudly endorses Dream Cymbals, and performs using Collision Drumsticks, Remo Heads, ACD Pedals, and vintage Rogers Drums.

"As a professional session musician I am always playing different genres of music in the studio or on stage. Dream Cymbals have a unique quality to them that I can use basically the same cymbal set up for Rock, Metal, Jazz, Latin, Hip Hop and the list goes on. Dream Cymbals are the most versatile cymbals I've ever played!"
