Sacha's Career

Born in London, Sacha Johnson studied percussion at the Birmingham Conservatoire and then won a scholarship study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. This was followed by a Fellowship at the Tanglewood Institute. As a freelance musician, he has worked with most of the U.K.s leading symphony orchestras and opera companies and has been a guest principal percussionist/timpanist with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, Welsh National Opera, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, The Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Opera North, Northern Sinfonia and the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland. He was a regular player with the contemporary music ensemble, 'Kokoro' where he premiered many new works as well as being a featured soloist. As a soloist, he has given numerous recitals on the vibraphone, performing several concertos for the instrument.

Away from classical music, Sacha has worked on several West End musicals including Jesus Christ Superstar, Cats, Saturday Night Fever, We Will Rock You, The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast. He has also recorded music for various television and film productions including Dr. Who and Disney Star Wars. In 2023, he performed as part of the coronation of King Charles III.

As committed to teaching as he is playing, Sacha has been teaching percussion at Marlborough College since 1998, becoming the Senior Tutor in 2007 and then Head of Percussion in 2008. He has taught at the Junior Department of Trinity Laban, The Birmingham Conservatoire and has given masterclasses at The Royal Northern College of Music, The Welsh College of Music and Drama and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He has also been a percussion tutor for The National Youth Orchestra Wales and The National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain as part of their 'Inspiration' program. In 2015, Sacha was invited by Chi-chi Nwanoku OBE to be the Principal Percussionist with the Chineke! Orchestra for their debut concert in the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London. Fully committed to the Chineke! mission to promote greater diversity in classical music, he has since gone on to perform extensively with the orchestra both in the U.K. and abroad.

"Dream make terrific cymbals that cover the diverse range of my work as a freelance percussionist. In the Chineke! Orchestra, they continually display their versatility, whether we are playing classical repertoire, playing music for a Marvel film or supporting a hip hop artist. As a company, Dream have been incredible as they listened to views and needs. Both in Canada and in the UK, the team have been great to me."
